Sir Francis Fox tells in his book "Sixty Three Years of Engineering" what happened in February 1891.
A Whale fishing vessel called "The Star of the East" had just departed from Falkland islands, when they caught sight of a big fish, a big spermwhale. The whale boats were launched and the men managed to harpoon the whale. pieces next day, Bartley was found from the stomach of the whale... alive. Bartley behaved like a mad couple of weeks, but was then heeled completely. The ordeal stamped him by making white his bare skin areas that became exposed to stomach acids of the whale.

Later on James Bartley told, that after the first embarrassment he felt that he was moving forward in darkest darkness where his hands must touch something slippery material that shrank when he touched it. He was able to breath easily but heat, darkness and his destiny shocked him so that he lost his consciousness. Bartley awoke not until in the cabin of the captain of the ship.
Bible says, that "Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah." (Jonah 1:17).
